Some Good Ideas- Installation Proposal

The Idea

An interactive installation that is married to Hawarden’s natural assets.

For a Mood Board think: shafts of sunlight, communal firepits, Alice, tepees, seasonal change, movement, the phoenix, the secret garden, intrigue.

The Pitch

This is an installation bespoke to the Hawarden Estate. It is born from my experience with specific trees and emotions gained at the Good Life Festivals.

It is artistic- I would need to produce it in situ. However, attached are images of the general intent.

The 3 main materials are trees, coloured bungee cord and ground anchors.

The anchors layout a pathway through the installation. Moving from one tree to another, they lead the public to an internal space for pause, social interaction and reflection.

Bungee cords rise up from each ground anchor into the tree canopies. These coloured cords define the walls of a path/ tunnel. As you make your way inside, the space is compressed from a tall entrance to an intimate inner kernel. This might contain natural seating and a bungee divide to pass through to an exit tunnel.

As the trees are subject to daily weather changes- the wind, the rain and the sun, so must the installation. The bungee’s embrace the wind by stretching and relaxing, they accept the rain and hold it back in dense portions, they punch down through the canopies like shafts of sunlight.

This submission shows the most ambitious installation for two specific trees close to the Manor, it requires 2000m+ of bungee, which is being sourced at reasonable cost. Another area between the pavilion and shop has been picked out for an alternative, smaller installation. Also multiples of even smaller, site specific versions are possible. These are more likely to accommodate adventurous children in warren-style designs in and around trees of the clients choice.

I am fascinated by the linear cat’s cradle style results I am able to achieve using bungee cords and have been looking for an outdoor situation to create such a piece. Here is a link to an internal installation Exhibition Design – henry milner ltd (wordpress.com)

I Hope you enjoy the design and look forward to hearing from you.
